R.I.P. WHFS
Previous | Next by elfie 12 January, 2005 - 4:38 PM

Pie just tipped me off to this... check out whfs.com... a quick office google search found this: Infinity Flips WHFS to Spanish

1/12/2005 >> muhgcee

Well at least they didn't touch DC101 or 98 Rock (should be called 97.9 Rock, damn it).

Washington Post discussion

Looks like the 90's are officially over and I may have another milestone on becoming old. I honestly hardly listened to them any more, but I have to say this is just strange.

Do we welcome our new Spanish overlords?

I have to say this kind of makes me need to repress some of my uglier thoughts about how some new people to this country need to do a better job of integrating into our culture. Apparently I have not done a very good job of repressing it, as I seemed to have just typed here for anyone to read anyhow.

1/12/2005 >> iceman

This was told to me earlier in the day and I didn't believe it. But it is true. Not that i loved whfs, but it was a decent cahnnel. Whats even worse is that I can't even understand the music thats on it now. But one good thing has come out of this. Those damn junkies are off the air....does anyone else feel they were annoying as hell?

And yes its truly sad the 80's are over... I mean 90's.

1/12/2005 >> iceman

***UPDATE***

Ok this truly pisses me off. I mean come on. How bad was whfs doing? I mean I thought the HFstevial brought them mad money.

Bastards, didnt even give me a chance to know that that was the last of whfs. Infinity broadcasting sucks!!!

1/12/2005 >> Septimus

I'm with Rich. I never listened to HFS anymore, but shit. They're a fucking institution. My lips are small over this one.

1/13/2005 >> jay

Just so people can have it, here is a small page with links to discussion, and the last minute of airtime in MP3 format. HFS pretty much sucked anymore, but yeah, since the 70's man...

1/13/2005 >> jay

and the actual link because im stupid and can't seem to edit this post.
http://www.hfstival.com/

1/13/2005 >> elfie

Since the 60s actually...

and yes, I agree that the junkies were the worst thing to ever happen to radio. They are the reason I stopped listening to HFS

1/13/2005 >> p373

I personally thought that WHFS blew. Middle of the road alterna-crap. They even sucked back in '92, when grunge was the shit and I liked such stuff.

It's kind of strange to get bent out of shape because the station went Spanish instead of simply flipping to a different English-language format. Who cares? A big chunk of the country speaks Spanish and their money's worth just as much as yours. Welcome to The Marketplace.

It also occurs to me that there's going to come a point where white people complaining about how all the little brown people aren't adapting to mainstream American norms won't make much sense because the "un-American" brown people will be the majority. And no, I don't think that's a bad thing.

1/13/2005 >> Pie

Um... I don't think negative feelings about the change in the station's format should be attributed to racism or discrimination. What the fuck are you thinking about?

It's upsetting because HFS has been around since God was a boy & it was the station for Alternative Rock. Just because popular music these days SUCKS doesn't make it any less depressing to see an institution fall. Something that has been a small, but significant part of a few people's lives for as long as they remember.

1/13/2005 >> Septimus

It also occurs to me that there's going to come a point where white people complaining about how all the little brown people aren't adapting to mainstream American norms won't make much sense because the "un-American" brown people will be the majority. And no, I don't think that's a bad thing.

It just means some one burned the "melting pot"

1/13/2005 >> p373

What the fuck are you thinking about?

I dunno, maybe Rich's comments about his "uglier thoughts about how some new people to this country need to do a better job of integrating into our culture?"

The thing about the notion of a melting pot is that most people seem to think that the melting goes one way... that "traditional" american norms will melt their way in to the lives of new immigrants. Culture doesn't work that way; the channel's full duplex.

1/13/2005 >> p373

And for the record, pie, I never said anything about racism or discrimination, I said that getting annoyed didn't make much sense. Meditate on the difference for a minute or two, huh?

1/13/2005 >> Septimus

American norms won't make much sense because the "un-American" brown people will be the majority.

and

Culture doesn't work that way; the channel's full duplex.

That's not full duplex, that's asynchronous. Hence the burning.

1/13/2005 >> p373

It's true that if one subculture is much larger than the others within a
given society, or if it is privileged in some way that allows it to extend
its cultural influence beyond its numbers, it will have a greater impact
on the culture as a whole than the other subcultures. That's why I said
that it makes little sense for white Americans to complain about
immigrants not acting "American" when "The Other" is the majority. At the
same time, however, it's important to remember that cultures are not static entities. Fuether. a dominant subculture does not hold a monopoly on the capacity to shape the overall culture.

African Americans, for example, have been an economically and politically
disadvantaged minority in this country for more than 400 years, but
they've still made an enormous cultural contribution. This goes beyond
things like music and literature and extends in to the history of
relations between white and black America and the resulting assumptions
that we have about each other and how we interact, both as individuals and
as subcultures. As black America has shaped the dominant culture, however,
so has the dominant culture shaped the culture of black America. This is
why I say that the channel is full duplex, though it might make more sense
to describe the relationship in terms of recursion.

1/13/2005 >> Pie

Time.

The way I saw your references in regards to the increasing Spanish population & the "un-american brown" comment, appeared to me to be a mild implication that those of us upset in regards to the format change is based mildly on cultural discrimination or racism.

If that's not what you were implying then fine. I understand what you mean about Rich's comment though.

1/13/2005 >> Septimus

As black America has shaped the dominant culture, however,
so has the dominant culture shaped the culture of black America. This is
why I say that the channel is full duplex, though it might make more sense to describe the relationship in terms of recursion.

I like that. Well stated.

I still like Dick Gregory's line about the draft in Vietnam:

"The white man has sent the black man to fight the yellow man to protect the land stolen from the red man."

And yes I know that has nothing to do with anything in this thread :)

1/13/2005 >> p373

Pie: If that's not what you were implying then fine.

I wasn't saying anything of the sort... if you miss AltRock, you miss AltRock. I don't see anything untoward with wishing you could hear it on the radio, you know?

Septimus: I like that. Well stated.

Cool, thanks. :)

1/13/2005 >> Pie

Okie-dokie.

1/14/2005 >> elfie

Decent article in the Washington Post that my dad pointed me to: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7886-2005Jan13.html

1/17/2005 >> ryan

HFS used to be good back in my highschool days ('94-'98). Since then they've sucked a fat one and only continued on a downward slope. I'm glad they're gone.

1/17/2005 >> ben

I forgot that they actually brought back the mutant dance party with Zoltar... i'll miss that, again...

my friend used to have a bunch of tapes from that show, when it was first on (early/mid 90s)

1/22/2005 >> elfie

HFS is back.... sort of

http://music.channel.aol.com/internet_radio/whfs

1/24/2005 >> elfie

they are also reported to be on 105.7 at night (something like 7pm-7am), but I haven't personally confirmed that yet.

3/19/2012 >> n0manarmy

Double resurrection! http://whfs.radio.com/ and this thread!

3/20/2012 >> elfie

ahaha yeah, I've been listening to 97.5 for a while now. It is absolutely the HFS I knew and loved. It's fantastic.

4/6/2012 >> rich

wow that was some cruddy things I kinda said up there seven years ago. I think it amazed me at that time that there was such an influx of people that enjoy Spanish music that it would justify the high power signal that 99.1 has in the Maryland area.

I have really changed my mind on this. People can speak and enjoy whatever language they like. I do think simply for budgetary reasons most government services can only be offered a very few languages, but technology makes serviceable translation to most any language easier and easier.
In fact I think it is about time to embrace Spanish as an official language of Government, at least at the Federal level. There are large sections of Miami, and Texas and California with populations primarily speaking Spanish. As well I fully support Puerto Rico's statehood as the first primarily Spanish speaking State. I think it would do this country good to have some official linguistic diversity.

regarding radio...

I don't always listen to FM, but when I do, I listen to 103.5.
